The Material Test Certificate: What to Verify
The material test certificate should trace the steel used in the chain links, pins, and rollers back to the steel mill that produced it. Key items to verify: the steel grade or composition table should show carbon content, manganese, silicon, and key alloying elements consistent with a chain-grade carbon steel (typically 10B21, 10B33, SCM series, or equivalent); the mechanical properties (tensile strength and yield strength) should be consistent with chain application requirements; the heat number on the certificate should be traceable to the production batch received. If the supplier provides a generic material certificate not specific to the delivered batch, request a batch-specific certificate.
The Chain Test Report: What to Verify
The chain test report certifies that a sample from the delivered batch has been tested to the breaking load specified in ANSI B29.1 or ISO 606. Verify: the test standard is clearly identified; the tested chain specification matches the specification delivered; the test result meets the minimum tensile strength required by the standard; and the test date and batch or lot number link the certificate to the delivered goods. A test certificate for a different chain specification, a different batch, or a test conducted months before shipment does not provide meaningful assurance for the delivered goods.

How to Specify Required Documents in the Purchase Order
Include this clause in the purchase order conditions: “The following documents are required with every delivery and are a condition of payment: (1) packing list; (2) commercial invoice; (3) certificate of origin; (4) material test certificate tracing to the production batch; (5) chain tensile strength test certificate per ANSI B29.1 / ISO 606. Non-supply of any required document within 14 days of delivery will be treated as a contractual shortfall subject to payment hold.”
Additional Documents for Specific Applications
For food processing applications: a declaration that the chain materials and surface treatments are suitable for food contact, and an MSDS/SDS for any chain lubricant applied during manufacture or packaging.
