Description

Lateral Flex Roller Chain for Curved Conveyors

SB Series side bow chains flex laterally around curves that standard roller chains cannot follow — eliminating the need for belt drives, separate curved conveyors, or corner transfer units wherever a single continuous chain must navigate a non-linear path.

What Side Bow Chain Does That Standard Chain Cannot

Standard roller chains are rigid in the lateral plane — they articulate freely in the vertical plane of sprocket engagement but cannot flex sideways without generating destructive stress on the link plates. When a conveyor layout requires a horizontal curve, designers using standard chain must either break the conveyor into separate straight sections connected by transfer stations, or use an entirely different conveying medium such as a flat belt or slat conveyor. Side bow chains provide a third option: a roller chain with engineered lateral flexibility that follows a curved path without transfer interruptions, while still engaging standard sprockets at the drive and take-up ends of the curve.

The lateral flexibility is achieved through two modifications to standard roller chain geometry: the pin-bushing diametral clearance is significantly enlarged in the lateral direction compared to standard precision roller chain, and the inner and outer link plates are slightly narrowed to reduce the interference that would otherwise occur when the chain bends sideways. These changes allow the chain to articulate around a horizontal curve radius as tight as 500mm (for the smallest SB sizes) while remaining capable of transmitting meaningful conveying loads along the full length of the curved run. The chain engages standard sprockets at the curve ends without any special tooth form modification.

Design Principles of the SB Series

Pin and Bushing Clearance

The enlarged lateral pin-bushing clearance in SB series chains is the primary mechanism enabling lateral flex. In standard precision roller chains, this clearance is minimal — typically 0.05–0.1mm — to maintain pitch accuracy and smooth sprocket engagement. SB series chains increase this clearance to 0.3–0.6mm depending on pitch size, allowing each link joint to rotate slightly in the lateral plane when the chain follows a curve. The cumulative lateral rotation across multiple links is what produces the chain’s ability to follow a curved path. The trade-off is that SB chains have a slightly lower working load rating than standard chains of the same pitch, and their pitch accuracy is reduced — they should not be used for precision indexing applications where exact positioning is required.

Conical Pin Design

SB series chains use a conical (tapered) pin design rather than the straight cylindrical pin of standard chains. The conical pin automatically centres the bushing within the clearance envelope under load, reducing the asymmetric bushing wear that would otherwise develop if the chain repeatedly navigated the same curved path in one direction. This centring action extends the service life of the pin-bushing interface significantly compared to straight-pin designs used in early lateral-flex chain designs.

Industrial Applications

🏭
Distribution Centre Sortation
Shoe sorters and cross-belt sorter systems use SB chains to navigate the curved divert tracks that redirect parcels to their destination lanes. The chain’s ability to follow the curved divert path without a transfer station reduces the conveyor footprint and eliminates the alignment problems that accumulate across multiple transfer points.
🏥
Hospital Logistics Systems
Automated hospital linen and supply distribution systems use overhead conveyor loops that navigate around structural columns and through doorways using SB chain. The chain’s continuous loop format eliminates the carrier transfer steps that would otherwise interrupt the logistics flow.
🥩
Meat Processing Overhead Conveyors
Overhead monorail conveyors in slaughterhouses and meat processing facilities carry carcasses and primal cuts through multiple processing stations. SB chains allow the overhead line to turn corners without transfer cranes, maintaining product orientation and chain continuity through the full process sequence.
📦
Spiral Lifts and Helical Conveyors
Spiral conveyors that raise or lower products between floor levels use SB chains to navigate the helical path. The chain follows both the horizontal curve and the vertical elevation change simultaneously — a combined lateral and vertical flex requirement that standard chains cannot meet.
🚗
Automotive Assembly Transfer
Car body transfer between assembly stations requires curves at plant layout transitions. SB chain loop conveyors navigate these curves continuously, keeping body carriers moving without the stop-and-index motion of transfer station-based systems.

Load Rating Considerations

Side bow chains are rated at lower working loads than equivalent-pitch standard chains, reflecting the enlarged pin-bushing clearance that reduces the load-bearing area at each joint. The Q min values in the specification table above are the straight-line tensile ratings — when the chain is operating on a curve, the effective tension in the chain is increased by the centripetal force required to maintain the chain on its curved path, and the chain guide wear force adds to the total lateral load on the pin-bushing interface. For curved sections longer than 1.5m, the centripetal tension increment should be calculated and added to the conveying load before verifying against the chain’s working load limit. Our engineering team provides curve tension calculations on request.

Components and Matching Parts

Standard ANSI Sprockets — SB Compatible
SB series chains run on standard ANSI sprockets of the same pitch. The enlarged pin-bushing clearance does not affect sprocket tooth engagement at the chain ends. 40SB uses #40 sprockets; 60SB uses #60 sprockets, etc.

Curved Guide Rails — UHMWPE and Steel
Ultra-high molecular weight polyethylene guide rail profiles in standard curve radii from 500mm to 2,000mm for SB series lateral flex chains. Straight guide sections for tangent runs between curves.

SB Series Connecting Links
Connecting links with the same enlarged clearance specification as the main SB chain. Cotter-pin type recommended for overhead conveyor installations.

Attachment Links for SB Chain
A1 and K1 attachment links compatible with SB chain pitch for mounting carriers, hooks, and pushers on lateral-flex conveyor systems.

Customer Reviews

★★★★★

“We design shoe sorter systems for the Nordic parcel market. 40SB and 43SB are our standard specification for divert track assemblies. The minimum curve radius of 500mm for 43SB allows us to fit divert tracks in tight sortation bay layouts that the larger SB sizes couldn’t accommodate. Quality is consistent and lead times are predictable for our project scheduling.”

“Installed 60SB chain on our overhead carcass conveyor renovation. The chain follows our existing rail curves without modification to the overhead structure — a significant project cost saving compared to installing transfer cranes at each curve. Chain has been running 16 months without adjustment.”

★★★★★

“First time using SB chain for a spiral lift project. The engineering team here provided curve tension calculations before we ordered, which gave us confidence in the specification. Installation was straightforward and the chain has performed exactly as the technical data predicted through 18 months of continuous operation.”

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the minimum curve radius for SB series chains?+
Minimum curve radii are 600mm for 40SB, 500mm for 43SB, 700mm for 50SB, 800mm for 60SB, 700mm for 63SB, and 900mm for 80SB. Below these radii, the link plate edges contact adjacent plates before the pin-bushing clearance is fully used, generating stress concentrations that cause early fatigue cracking. Always maintain at least 10% above the minimum radius in the design to allow for rail manufacturing tolerances.
Do SB chains require special sprockets?+
No — SB chains run on standard ANSI roller chain sprockets of the same pitch. The enlarged pin-bushing clearance affects lateral flexibility but not the vertical engagement geometry that determines sprocket compatibility. The drive and take-up sprockets should be positioned at the straight tangent sections, not on the curved portion of the chain run.
What is the difference between 40SB and 43SB?+
Both 40SB and 43SB use 12.700mm pitch (the same as ANSI #40) but have different pin-bushing clearance values. 43SB has a tighter clearance than 40SB, providing a smaller minimum curve radius (500mm vs 600mm) and slightly higher load rating within the same pitch envelope. 43SB is preferred when the tighter curve radius is needed; 40SB is more widely available and may be a shorter lead time for standard orders.
Can SB chains be used in the vertical plane as well as horizontal curves?+
SB chains flex laterally (horizontally) but articulate normally in the vertical plane — the same as standard roller chain. They can therefore be used on conveyors that transition from horizontal to inclined sections without any issue, as long as the curve they are navigating is in the horizontal plane. For simultaneous horizontal and vertical curves (helical paths), additional engineering analysis is required — contact us with your helix geometry for a feasibility assessment.
What lubrication is required for SB chains?+
SB chains require lubrication at the enlarged pin-bushing interface — the larger clearance means the oil film must bridge a greater gap than in standard chains. ISO VG 150–220 chain oil delivered by drip or bath lubrication is the standard specification. The guide rail contact surface also benefits from lubrication — low-friction UHMWPE rails significantly reduce the lubrication demand compared to steel rails by eliminating the metal-to-metal contact.
