The chain wrap angle on the small sprocket must be at least 120 degrees for reliable power transmission. A long chain span between sprockets acts as a vibrating string — its natural vibration frequency decreases as span length increases. Initial Centre Distance for a New Drive
For a new drive where the centre distance can be chosen freely, target 40 to 45 times the chain pitch. This leaves approximately 5P of take-up travel in each direction — sufficient to accommodate initial installation and the full service elongation from new to the 3 percent replacement threshold.
When Centre Distance Is Fixed by Machine Geometry
When the required centre distance falls outside the 30 to 50P range, change the chain pitch rather than accept a suboptimal centre distance. A centre distance below 30P requires a smaller pitch chain. A centre distance above 50P requires a larger pitch chain or an intermediate idler sprocket to break the span.
